Novelist Charles Condomine invites Madam Arcati, a medium and clairvoyant, to his house for a séance, hoping to find material for his next book. Instead his temperamental first wife, Elvira, haunts him. While she attempts to ruin Charles’s second marriage to Ruth, she sabotages the car to have Charles join her in the afterlife. The plan backfires and Ruth instead passes over to torment Elvira, and cause chaos in the house.
